The resort was founded in 1954. Since the mid-1950s, Shymbulak was a training base for Soviet skiers, the USSR and Kazakhstan championships were held on its slopes. Each year in the beginning of February skiers competed at Shymbulak, contending for the Prize of Alexandra Artyomenko, the 11-time USSR champion, master of sports and participant at the 1956 Olympic Games. Those who ski or have, at least, watched training of elite alpine athletes know only too well how much time and effort it takes to become proficient at an elite level. In times past, before the introduction of our ski lifts, it took our skiers a 3 hour hike to ascend, yet only 15 minutes to ski back down the mountain.

In the run-up to the 2011 Winter Asian Games, extensive work was carried out to reconstruct the ski resort. The total length of our ski trails was extended from 6 km to 18 km. On the busiest pistes the width  was also increased by up to ten times the original size. The ski slopes were equipped with “state of art” snow cannons, which allow our season to begin earlier and to extend for much longer. Within the resort’s there are 12 different restaurants/cafes at which to dine, 2 separate hotels and 2 sports and souvenir shops also. The cuisine at Shymbulak is truly global with both local Kazakh specialties and food from  all over the world available.

There is an extensive Ski & Snowboard school which has in excess of 80 multi lingual and highly qualified instructors working on site daily.

Our Adventure Office which promotes an outdoor and active way of life also operates at the ski resort. There we offer adventure activities, most of which are available all year round – including paragliding, heliski, helicopter walks, tube luge, training in free ride (solo & group), hiking, climbing & ski tours with professional guide accompaniment. In summer we offer extreme activities, including: mountain biking, paragliding, buggy driving, horse & pony riding, rope park, trampoline centre & hiking and climbing with professional guides in the most beautiful scenery imaginable. Plus various other recreational facilities.

During the reconstruction of the resort safe, modern & efficient european cable cars were installed which extensively increased traffic capacity to and from the resort. A new gondola ropeway was built from Medeo base station all the way up to Shymbulak resort. This is currently the worlds third longest gondola ropeway at 4.5 km’s. The capacity of this gondola is as much as 2000 people per hour at peak traffic times. The vision for our resort was to build ropeways which operated in a single chain so that skiers and tourists alike could reach the summit at Talgar pass within 30 mins.

A wide and varied range of services, activities and cuisine at the resort makes Shymbulak a popular place, not only for Almaty residents but also for national and International tourists to our wonderful city. The number of foreign tourists visiting the resort in both winter and summer increases greatly year after year. Location, infrastructure and ease of access from Almaty city makes it possible to get to our resort quickly to enjoy the indescribable beauty of Zailiyskiy Alatau and its ancient fir tree forests. In the foothills of the wild and unexplored mountains there lies long & winding valleys which are carpeted in beautiful pine forests & beautiful lush meadows.

Come and enjoy the local beauties!
